It was the perfect day; the sun shining amid a gentle breeze. Right next to Brookings, Oregon harbor; glistening blue waters, most of the boats out.
The crowd was packed into the pavilion area.
Flags were flapping in the wind signifying each segment of the military. Kleenex dabbing at tears.
Leading the ceremony was Post Commander Rick Bremer, VFW Post 966 out of Brookings, Oregon. Memorial day, also known as Decoration Day began as a memorial to soldiers killed during the Civil Way. Observed during the last Monday in May, it is to remember those who died serving our nation, and to honor their families.
Mention was made of the last two WW1 survivors: Frank Buckles, died at the age of 110 on February 27, 2011 in the United States, and Florence Green, died at the age of 110 on February 4, 2012 in the United Kingdom.
Respectful remembrance of those killed during WW11, the Korean War, Viet Nam, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq wars. Family members placed flowers on a mock grave site.

Bill Bowles’ widow, Norma Bowles, accepted the American Flag and flowers. A ceremony held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Viet Nam war was held in Washington DC.
Afterwards a mournful TAPS was played, then the ceremony ended with the playing of the bagpipes.
