If you driven by CVS lately, you’ll see 1/2 dozen people sitting in chairs on HWY 101 in front of CVS holding signs that are pro-life and anti the abortion pills sold in CVS.

On Friday, October 27th, ambassadors, members of Congress, foreign government officials and women’s health advocates from around the world gathered on Capitol Hill this week to recommit to protecting the rights of women and unborn children. The Geneva Consensus Declaration (GCD) had their third anniversary committed to the sovereign right of nations to adopt policies that align with their values without foreign interference and to advance women’s optimal health, strengthen families, and declare there is no international right to abortion.

During the third anniversary gathering, Valerie Huber announced that the Republic of Chad would be joining the GCD coalition while the United States, Columbia and Brazil removed themselves from the Declaration.

2.  Two medications — mifepristone (Mifeprex) and misoprostol (Cytotec) — are usually taken together to end a pregnancy within the first ten weeks of pregnancy. Mifepristone works by blocking the hormone progesterone. Without progesterone, the pregnancy cannot continue to grow in the uterus. Misoprostol causes cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus.

Searching most media about the abortion pill, it is stressed that it is a SAFE medication. Heading the list, of course, if Planned Parenthood.

But when is it not safe?

• Are too far along in the pregnancy.
• Have a pregnancy outside of the uterus (ectopic pregnancy).
• Have a blood clotting disorder or significant anemia.
• Have chronic adrenal failure.
• Use long-term corticosteroids.
• Have an intrauterine device (IUD).
• Have an allergy to the medications used.
• Do not have access to emergency care.
• Can’t return for a follow-up visit.

Can there be any side effects?

Mifepristone Side Effects

The first medication, mifepristone, is designed to end the pregnancy. Bleeding does not typically start at this stage, however common side effects women experience within 2 to 24 hours after taking mifepristone include nausea, weakness, fever, chills, vomiting, headache, diarrhea or dizziness.

Misoprostol Symptoms

The second medication, misoprostol, is taken at home up to 48 hours later. This medication expels the pregnancy, so it causes more painful symptoms and has a higher risk of side effects and complications.

The level of pain from the abortion pill varies from woman to woman, but nearly everyone will experience heavy cramping and bleeding that starts 2 to 4 hours after taking misoprostol. The most intense pain and bleeding typically lasts for about 6-hours, but these other common side effects can last for 2 to 4 weeks after the abortion:  

• Abdominal pain and cramping
• Extended spotting and bleeding
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Fever
• Chills
• Diarrhea
• Headache
