Supervisor Darrin Short Refuses To Tell Public 

In a grueling 45 minute presentation of the Health and Human Resource Department, Shelby Beckenstab reported 10 cases of lead poisoing within this county. During public comment the question was asked what area of Del Norte County is the lead poisoning occurring.  In response, Darrin Short Stated to the public, “ I don’t want back and forth questions answered, you can write the Health and Human Service Department and ask the question.”

The EPA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention both say that no amount of lead in water is safe. Lead can damage the kidneys, liver, and reproductive system.

Lead can enter drinking water when plumbing materials that contain lead corrode, especially where the water has high acidity or low mineral content that corrodes pipes and fixtures. The most common sources of lead in drinking water are lead pipes, faucets, and fixtures. In homes with lead pipes that connect the home to the water main, also known as lead services lines, these pipes are typically the most significant source of lead in the water.  Lead pipes are more likely to be found in older cities and homes built before 1986.  Among homes without lead service lines, the most common problem is with brass or chrome-plated brass faucets and plumbing with lead solder.

In other words, Darrin Short would not have the question answered to the public because he continues to demonstrate lack of transparency which causes harm to the public. Is lead in our drinking water? It more than likely is, and he is hiding it from the public.
