It is that time of season for black trumpet mushrooms (Craterellus cornucopioides), hedgehogs (Hydnum repandum,) and matsutake (Tricholoma matsutake) are popular fungi to forage for. I will be conducting a foray starting at 8:50 AM from Hiouchi Hamlet (east parking lot ) tomorrow 12/16. It has been a good year for fungi but we have lost a lot of foraging area due to the recent fires so with the recent activity of fellow foragers finding some of these might not be optimum. Still, if you don’t look you won’t find.
Sunday will be our usual ( 3rd Sunday of each month Sept-April) meeting at the Family Resource Center at 494 Pacific Avenue from 2-4 PM. This is a potluck meeting but please only dishes with store purchased mushrooms. People are encouraged to bring their fungi /mushrooms for help identifying them and get questions about foraging and fungi answered.
I currently have a Facebook page (Del Norte Mushroom Club – with pictures of mushrooms on top ) where you can join, get news about the club and post pictures. If you do NOT ‘do’ Facebook, please submit your email address to Delnortemushroomclub@gmail.com, I have just started compiling an email list for folks not using social media.
Remember RULE #1. If you are not 100% sure of what kind of mushroom you have, do NOT eat it. Knowledge is your friend.
