By Marjorie Taylor Greene – March 6, 2025
WASHINGTON D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA-14) introduced the English Language Unity Act of 2025, legislation that establishes English as the official language of the United States, endorsed by President Trump and co-led by Rep. Josh Brecheen (OK-2). This bill ensures that all official government functions are conducted in English and reinforces a uniform English language requirement for naturalization. This bill will codify President Trump’s Executive Order designating English as the official language of the United States. Congresswoman Greene stated, “The Declaration of Independence. The Constitution. The Bill of Rights. All of our most sacred founding documents were written in English. It is the language of our Founding Fathers and the language spoken by nearly all Americans today. Making English the official language of the United States is a critical step in restoring the unity and shared culture that forged our nation. For generations, America has welcomed individuals from all over the world. But in recent years, our country has lost its identity because our government has failed to require new citizens to assimilate. That begins with language. A nation that cannot communicate cannot stand united. My bill ensures that America remains strong, sovereign, and rooted in the heritage that made it great.” Upon introduction of the bill, Congressman Josh Brecheen issued the following statement: “When our ancestors drew forth a nation from a vast continent, they were speaking English; when Americans tamed the West, we spoke English; when Americans conquered the Moon, we did so speaking English. Throughout American history, Anglo-Saxon characteristics, such as the English language, have bound together our nation. Congresswoman Greene’s common-sense bill acknowledges this basic fact, and I’m honored to work with her on this effort.” The English Language Unity Act makes clear that English is the official language of the United States and requires that all official government proceedings, documents, and naturalization ceremonies be conducted in English. It also mandates that individuals applying for U.S. citizenship demonstrate the ability to read and understand key founding documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. In the wake of increasing efforts to weaken national identity and undermine assimilation, Congresswoman Greene’s legislation reaffirms the principle that speaking a common language is critical for maintaining national unity, ensuring economic opportunity, and preserving the American way of life. The bill’s original co-sponsors include: Rep. Josh Brecheen (Co-Lead, OK-2), Rep. Paul Gosar (AZ-9), Rep. Mike Collins (GA-10), Rep. Mary Miller (IL-15), and Rep. Brandon Gill (TX-26). Senator Bernie Moreno (OH) has introduced the English Language Unity Act of 2025’s Senate companion bill. ProEnglish is supporting the passage of this bill. |
