It was quite a week – both in our nation’s Capital and in California’s.
Let’s start with redistricting. A court in Texas has struck down that state’s new congressional map. Under the original language of Prop. 50, that would have invalidated California’s new map as well – but Newsom and the Legislature removed that language at the last minute.
Still, Newsom’s map is also being challenged in federal court. As I discussed on CNN, this is because while our Redistricting Commission was required to follow the Constitution in a public process, Newsom skipped all of that in the rush to ram his gerrymandered map through.
I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up – I’m still operating on the assumption that the Prop. 50 map will be used next year – but Newsom’s team appears legitimately concerned. Meanwhile, I am making a final push for a vote on my bill to undo Prop. 50 and all mid-decade gerrymanders.
Separately, I am authoring legislation that would ban gerrymandering nationwide while also establishing nationwide Voter ID. That is the simple formula for restoring trust in the democratic process that has broad support with Americans of all political leanings.
And following the indictment of Newsom’s chief of staff on 23 felonies, I gave a House Floor Speech on the “culture of corruption” in Sacramento, personified by Newsom. This is what is largely behind the decline of California: a corrupt political class that doesn’t serve the people.
I also blasted Newsom after a nonpartisan Legislative Analyst report highlighted his latest failures: the state has an $18 billion deficit, “larger than anticipated,” and there has literally been “no payroll job growth in the state so far this year.”
Elsewhere in DC, I appeared on Meet the Press to advocate for a fiscally responsible way to cut healthcare costs; I chaired a hearing on Career Technical Education; and I advocated strongly for release of the Epstein Files in a Floor debate. Soon thereafter, the bill passed nearly unanimously.
