Parents Rights Restored

I warned Newsom that requiring schools to keep secrets from parents about the name and gender used by their child was a clear violation of federal law. He signed the bill anyway. Sure enough, it was just blocked by the Supreme Court. Parents’ rights are finally being restored.

This comes after I held a hearing, as Chair of the K-12 Education Subcommittee, on another recent decision securing the constitutional right to opt your child out of radical or profane curricula. We’re now holding California districts accountable if they fail to comply.

And it follows our successful legislation last year to expand private school choice to millions of students. I’ve also introduced the High-Quality Charter Schools Act to do the same for charters; and we recently passed legislation through Committee to protect homeschool families.

Meanwhile, I’m calling on Congress to return to D.C. and get the Department of Homeland Security open. I’m also calling for an end to the perk where Members of Congress can skip TSA lines – just as I fought to shut down the secret DMV used by Sacramento politicians.

Elected officials should suffer the consequences of their own failures. In California, those failures are legion: gas prices, for one, are almost $2 above the national average. I’m proposing an immediate suspension of the gas tax, saving our drivers 61 cents per gallon.

Despite these absurdly high gas prices, a new study finds California has the second worst roads in America. When you pay the highest taxes yet drive over the deepest potholes, your government is broken.

But together, we are fixing it. We’ve cut off high-speed rail funds. We’ve ended free healthcare for illegal immigrants. We’ve reversed the gas car ban. We’ve made crime illegal again and removed homeless encampments. We’re building water storage and managing our forests.

We have come a long way in Newsom-Proofing California. And we’re just getting started.
