I’ve been helping my grandma, Katherine Kelly, collect signatures for the prop 218 protest to try and stop the water rate increase. For those who don’t know what that is, if we collect half plus one signatures from water customers (only one per property) then the city can’t raise the water rate. This is in the California Constitution and it is our right to protest these rate increases.

I wanted to say about the signature collecting that people are grateful we are doing this and eager to sign. Most people tell me of how they are struggling to pay their bills already and can’t see having the bill go any higher. If you could see their faces and hear their stories it would make you ashamed that we have a city council that would even consider raising the rates. It is heart breaking that so many people are in such a bad way and the city people just don’t care about them.

I just wanted everyone to know that the struggling people my grandma talks about are real human beings with real hardships in their lives. Out of the hundreds and hundreds of signatures we have collected there’s only been handful of people who didn’t want to sign but everyone else is happy we are doing this. And I’m happy to be doing this for people in need. To make a better world, we need to care about each other.
