I have been watching this ongoing debate about fluoridating the water and decided to do some research on my own, and frankly, the thought of fluorides in our drinking water completely appalls me.

Fluorine compounds or fluorides are listed by the U. S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease registry (ATSDR) as among the top 20 of 275 substances that pose the most significant threat to human health.

Fluorides are cumulative toxins. The fact that fluorides accumulate in the body is the reason that US law requires the Surgeon General to set a Maximum Contaminant Level for fluoride content in public water supplies as determined by the EPA.

There is NOT a fluoride that has been FDA approved for ingestion.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) acknowledges that adverse reactions due to fluoride occur in toothpaste. Since safety precautions are warranted in toothpaste’s, it follows that safety precautions are warranted with fluoride in any form, whether in water, toothpastes, supplements, rinses, medications, etc. This especially applies to fluoride in water since no one can reliably analyze a person’s degree of thirst, degree of absorption, and individual reactions. Thus, fluoride in water becomes even more likely to cause toxic reactions in the body (Docket No. 7N-0436. Federal Register, 2/22/2000, Vol. 65, No. 35, p. 8718-8722).

Yet, the FDA does not have the power to regulate what goes into community water supplies, only the EPA.

The American Dental Association (ADA) has felt compelled to take some action as the visible signs of dental fluorosis are undeniable and have risen disturbingly. The ADA has revised their fluoride recommendations downwards (Vol. 126, 12/95, p. 1622). Similar revisions were made by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. The ADA chart indicates that infants up to age 6 months should receive NO supplementary fluoride, even if the water supply contains no fluoride at all. Therefore, consumption of ANY fluoridated water can only be viewed as overmedication of infant’s up to age 6 Months.
The chart recommends that children age 3 – 6 years living in a non-fluoridated area receive no more than 0.50 mg./day of fluoride supplement. This amount is found in 16 ounces of fluorinated water.
Therefore, a child from age 3 – 6 years who drinks more than 2 cups of fluoridated water per day is overmedicated.

July 1997, ADA News Release – “Can Your Child Be Getting Too Much Fluoride Through Baby Food?”, the Journal of the American Dental Association reported that baby foods are too high in fluoride, such as chicken , dry infant cereals, etc. Total fluoride intake could reach approximately 5 mg/daily or more. “Total fluoride intake is out of control”.

Fluoride is cumulative and children store up even more fluoride than adults, especially during their tender years of skeletal growth. Parents are misled to believe they can freely give their babies and older children fluoride in their water, in their food, and in their supplements. They are not told about the adverse effects of fluoride reported in the U.S. Pharmacopeia, Physicians’’ Desk Reference, and numerous medical studies.

U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (April, 1993), “Existing data indicates that subsets of the population may be unusually susceptible to the toxic effect of fluoride and its compounds. These populations include the elderly, people with deficiencies of calcium, magnesium, and or Vitamin C, and people with cardiovascular and kidney problems.

*Are we going to be performing health evaluations on all persons drinking our water?
*If we can’t teach people to use good oral hygiene, how are we going to teach them to use only bottled water to mix their baby formulas?
*Wouldn’t that money be better and more safely spent increasing our communities’ dental hygiene education?

Please don’t put poisons into our drinking water.
