A call came in from a woman that learned about the Gleaning Group from an article in the Triplicate. Her apple tree was chock full of apples. Far in excess of anything she had a need for.
Four women from the Group went out with ladder and plastic bags, and in an hour and a half picked almost 400 pounds of apples off one tree. Since the tree had split and fallen over, one volunteer helped the owner to cut off branches to make it easier for her neighbor to come in with a chain saw. This volunteer clearly went way beyond the call of duty and said, “Tell your readers not to expect this kind of service. This was a one time thing.”
Once loaded in the truck, the first two women set off to deliver 250 pounds of apples with the destination of CAN (Community Action Network).
Other recipients of apples so far were Harrington House and Our Daily Bread Ministries.
