Burning the president in effigy. Power of the NARCOS. Cops living in poverty because of low wages. Murders of innocent college students.
In the last decade more than 100,000 have died and 27,000 have gone missing. November 20, is usually a day reserved for the celebration of Mexico’s 1910-1917 Revolution, but Mexicans were in no mood for celebrations.
Here’s what happening. On September 26th, 43 students, all trainee teachers, went missing after attending a protest in Iguala, Guerrero State, Mexico.
The official explanation – drug cartels killed them and buried them in a mass grave. Forensic tests are being conducted. Families and friends of the students are unconvinced.
The Mayor of Iguala, Jose Luis Abarca, has been arrested facing accusations that he ordered police to confront the students on the day of their disappearance on September 26th.
These 43 lives cut short has galvanized all of this opposition due to rampant political corruption and violence. Thousands marched on the capital in three protest marches. Demonstrations are being held throughout Mexico.
Ever since the disappearance of the 43, protests and demonstrations have been mounting in more and more locations around Mexico.
Movie star handsome President Enrique Pena Nieto has not been spared his constituents anger. After 3 peaceful marches, protesters burned his picture in effigy and threw Molotov cocktails and clashed with riot police outside Mexico City’s National Palace Thursday night. Because of the apparent abduction by corrupt police rather than the drug cartels, this issue is burning out of control like a forest fire.
