Opinion and Commentary By Linda Sutter – August 7, 2024

In a controversial decision at today’s Harbor District meeting, four board members voted to grant Harbormaster Tim Petrick a substantial raise and bonus. Petrick’s new annual salary will be $130,250, accompanied by a $4,127.50 bonus. This decision comes in the wake of a Grand Jury report highlighting Petrick’s misuse of the Harbor District credit card for personal expenses.

The board’s decision has raised eyebrows, especially given Petrick’s recent history of financial mismanagement. In 2023, a writ of execution was issued against him for personal debt. Additionally, Petrick has been known to use the Harbor District credit card to cover meals, a practice that violates government codes since the Harbor is a public entity, not a private corporation.

Further complicating matters, Petrick’s new contract suggests that the Harbor District may need to take out a loan to cover his bonus. This is a significant concern given the Harbor’s ongoing financial struggles. The contract also includes a clause for up to 18 months of severance pay if Petrick is terminated, a benefit that surpasses typical union agreements.

  1. Wasn’t he just given a $9,000 Bonus? I really don’t see any changes in the harbor other than they cleared out an RV Park which must have lost some revenue. Why if we have such competent leaders do they always have to pay for consultants to come up with ideas. Despite Linda’s investigation this Board seems to care less and continues to bankrupt the harbor.

  2. This is absolutely ridiculous. Tim is a bully to those who work with him, and definitely not deserving of a COLA, raise, AND bonus. Take the humble road Petrick, and do what other government leaders have done the last few years…..forfeit you raise in lieu of public’s best interest? You credit the work of those who came and have gone before you on your back.
You should be ashamed of yourself taking a wage increase with the Harbor in the financial distress its in.
