Dispatcher I: $1,818.00- $2,209.80

Dispatcher II: $1,908.91 – $2,320.29

The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Dispatcher I/II/III. This position is classified as full-time.

This is a responsible position that serves to dispatch emergency and routine telecommunication messages to and from field personnel and law enforcement agencies and to perform clerical duties associated with the operations and activities of the Sheriff/Coroner’s Office.  This classification is non-sworn position. Employees in this classification receive direct to limited supervision in the performance of clerical, technical and security duties at an entry to skilled level.   Under general supervision, will receive calls from the public and will dispatch the proper personnel to the emergency situation. Will assist in either emergency 911 calls, non-emergency phone lines or in person.  Employees in this classification must have strong ethical and honest values.

Dispatcher I is the entry level in the classification series.  The entry level position is assigned specific duties which will increase experience and skills by assisting and participating in the activities associated with the dispatch function, additional duties are assigned as experience is acquired.  After successful completion of required training, additional experience, and meeting requirements incumbents may be eligible for advancement in this series.

Dispatcher II is the journey level in this series and performs duties and tasks under minimal supervision.  Employees who advance to this level must have successfully completed the required training and demonstrated skills and the ability to adequately fulfill the responsibilities of the position.

Dispatcher III is the skilled level in this series and performs duties and tasks with minimal supervision except as new or unusual circumstances arise.  Employees who advance to this level must have demonstrated the ability to work on a relatively independent basis in routine or emergency situations. This level may assist with training and oversee other dispatchers in a lead person capacity.

Detailed Work Activities

Essential job duties may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics.  The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities.  Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.
 

  • Receives calls for services from the public, either by emergency 911 calls, non-emergency phone lines, or in person.
  •  Operates Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) equipment quickly and efficiently so as to dispatch appropriate law enforcement, fire and/or medical personnel.
  • Operates a variety of telecommunication equipment to receive and transmit information regarding vehicle registration, driving records, warrants, criminal records and/or other related matters.
  •  Receives and processes routine business calls, requests for information and/or referrals to other agencies. Analyzes, evaluates and determines appropriate responses to situations requiring law enforcement intervention, which may include determining proper jurisdiction, personnel and/or equipment to be dispatched.
  • Maintains and records contacts with field patrol units.
  •  Receives and processes routine business calls, requests for information, and/or references to appropriate agencies. 
  • Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Dispatcher I:

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. certificate and general knowledge of the functions of public safety agencies.
  • Applicants for Dispatcher must attain a passing score on the POST certified Dispatcher written examination that assesses the skills and knowledge necessary for successful job performance.  Content areas of the exam include 1) understanding oral information; 2) vocabulary; 3) ability to perform dispatching work; 4) ability to interpret codes and information, and; 5) reading and understanding written information.
  • Applicants  for Dispatcher must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation, including obtaining CLETS clearance through fingerprint submission, must successfully complete a written and oral psychological examination and pass a medical evaluation.
  • Upon hire, incumbents must complete a 12-week, rapid paced job training course, including successful completion of Emergency Medical Dispatch training.

Dispatcher II:

  • In addition to the above, a minimum of one year of satisfactory experience as a Dispatcher I or equivalent position with another agency.

Dispatcher III:

  • In addition to the above, a minimum of two years of satisfactory experience as a Dispatcher that includes one year at a II level and the demonstrated ability to work under general supervision.

This work consists of varied and responsible clerical, technical, and security duties at an entry to skilled level in a classification series.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s license.
  • All County of Del Norte employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through State law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County of Del Norte requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect.  Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Work related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • The operation and functions of the Sheriff’s Department and other public safety agencies.
  • The applicable rules, regulations, and procedures of the Sheriff-Coroner’s Office and the Federal Communications Commission on the receipt and transmission of radio and/or wireless communications.
  • The operation of computer equipment and basic software applications.

Ability to:

  • Effectively operate telecommunication equipment such as two-way radios and CAD equipment.
  • Communicate effectively and tactfully in both oral and written form.
  • React quickly, efficiently, and calmly in an emergency situation and to adopt an effective course of action.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, inmates and the general public.
  • Type accurately at a rate sufficient to perform job duties.
  • Maintain concentration and awareness during long period of time.
  • Perform extensive data entry while performing other duties such as answering phones and radio traffic.
  • Memorize and recall numeric and alpha codes used on the radio as well as common Penal and Vehicle Code sections.
  • Keep accurate records.
  • Work a variety of shifts, including weekends, holidays and overtime.

Selection Process:
