Port Angeles – Results are in from the fluoride survey sent out by the City of Port Angeles, and a majority of the respondents voted against the continuance of adding fluoride to the city’s water.

The City Council polled the City’s water utility customers by mail with surveys sent out to each water utility customer living in the City and the PUD incorporated areas.

9,762 polls were mailed out on Friday, November 6th, and the City arranged for the postage to be paid through a postage paid account in hopes that it would encourage those eligible to participate. Those surveys were accepted through November 27th.

Former County Auditor Patty Rosand was hired on a temporary basis to oversee the advisory poll count. The results of those survey showed just over 4,000 of the surveys were returned, or 43%.

41% voted for fluoridation while 56% were against the measure. There were 14 invalid surveys, and 74 people had no opinion on the matter.

The City of Port Angeles is contractually obligated to continue fluoridation of the municipal water supply until May 18, 2016.

In a released statement, the City of Port Angeles said that, “After that date, fluoridation will continue unless the City Council takes action to discontinue the practice.”
