There is significant concern about the road located between 7th and 8th streets along Pebble Beach Drive. Road closure signs are up. Barricades and orange cones are up. City trucks are there. The hillside is unstable and appears to be losing ground underneath the road.
If you drive down there and want to walk around, do not walk on the beach side of the road. People routinely walking their dog are being cautioned to stay on the other side of the street or to go inland a block.
Owning property along Pebble Beach Drive gives you a million dollar view of the ocean. Excessive rains are one of the natural occurrences that homeowners live with. This year, rainfall is 119% of normal according to ggweather.com with over 35 inches as of January 13th. High tides have contributed to this erosion.
According to investigative reporter, Linda Sutter, “In 2017 the City obtained funds for the Pebble Beach stabilization project. Although a portion was completed the bureaucracy of the Coastal Commission prevented the stabilization and now we experience this. Now that it has become an emergency there are hopes to complete the stabilization quicker.”
