Very soon now, the Crescent City, City Council, will be voting to approve a series of sewer rate increases. 5% a year for the next 4 years at least. And it won’t end there. The City will never have enough money for their sewer system. They made a series of bad business decisions in combination with suspected fraud, graft and corruption which they never wanted to investigate.
Proposition 218 will once again come into play. California law allows for ratepayers and property owners that are hooked up to sewer to protest any rate increase. There are approximately 3,300 parcels that qualify for Prop 218. If 50% + 1 protest the rate increase, (about 1,650 valid signatures) then the City cannot raise the rates.
In the very near future, expect a call from someone associated with the Taxpayers Association asking for contributions to the fund. The goal is to raise $5,000 to pay for workers to collect valid signatures, for advertising and to raise money for a legal fund. When you get that call, please give serious thought to how much you can contribute. Calculate whether you want to pay 20% for sure over the next 4 years if the protest fails, or a portion of that to make sure the protest wins. How much is it worth to you to stop another rate increase?
