This year, I decided to venture to Sacramento to attend the California State Fair. Unfortunately, I left with a sense of disappointment. The experience was far from the exciting and enriching event I had anticipated. In contrast, the Del Norte County Fair proved to be a far more satisfying experience, earning it a top spot in my book.

A Letdown at the State Fair

In past years, the California State Fair was known for its impressive variety of exhibits showcasing the creativity and craftsmanship of the people. However, this year was different. The once-abundant exhibits were nowhere to be found. A highlight of previous fairs was the botanical display, which rivaled those found in places like the Bellagio in Las Vegas. Sadly, there was no such display at the State Fair this year.

Instead of the expected displays of art, agriculture, and innovation, the fair was dominated by commercialized booths. It felt more like a shopping mall than a celebration of California’s diverse talents and culture. In a time when many people are tightening their belts, the focus on luxury items felt out of place and unappealing.

Del Norte Fair: A Breath of Fresh Air

In stark contrast, the Del Norte County Fair delivered an experience that was both enjoyable and meaningful. The fair received my personal “First Place” award for its impressive presentation and community spirit.

One of the highlights of the Del Norte Fair was the botanical display, which was the most improved I’ve seen in years. The newly painted walls and white displays provided the perfect backdrop for showcasing a stunning variety of plant life. The entire exhibit felt cleaner, more organized, and inviting, setting a high standard for fairs to follow.

Additionally, the animal barns were a delightful surprise. They were filled with rabbits, chickens, pigs, lambs, and other animals, offering visitors a chance to connect with the agricultural roots of the community. The presence of these animals added a layer of authenticity and charm to the fair.

Community Spirit at Its Best

As the day went on, I couldn’t help but notice the happiness of our community members as they enjoyed the fair. At 4:30 pm, people were indulging in their favorite fair foods, sharing laughter and joy with friends and family. It was a heartwarming sight that highlighted the power of community events to bring people together.

Kim Floyd, the Fair Manager, deserves high praise for her efforts in making the Del Norte Fair a resounding success. Her dedication and attention to detail resulted in an event that not only outshone the California State Fair but also brought pride to our community.

In conclusion, while the California State Fair may have fallen short of expectations, the Del Norte County Fair proved that local events can offer an experience that is rich in community spirit, culture, and enjoyment. This year’s fair was a testament to the hard work and creativity of those involved, and it truly deserves recognition for its achievements.

  1. Thank you Linda! I agree, our fair was pretty amazing for a small community, with alot to offer! Thank you for this!

  2. Does the State Fair still have the Counties Exhibit, and if so, did Del Norte have an exhibit there? One can see photos of past Del Norte County exhibits along with the Mission Statements at the entrance to the Board of Supervisors Chambers in the Flynn Center.
