By Donna Westfall – September 1, 2016 – While waiting for Doug at SuperCuts in Medford, Oregon, I picked up a flyer of advertisements and one caught my eye. Called, The Scooping Crew. They bag and dispose of poop. I’ve heard of dog walkers, but the Scooping Crew is a new one.
This brings to mind that we need new business ideas in our town to create more jobs. The days of going to a knife sharpener, or shoe repair and watch repair appear to be over as people buy new rather than maintain what they have. The days of door to door sales don’t look so hot either. Same with telemarketing. How many have you hung up on? Or, maybe you put yourself on the Do-Not-Call list. The latest fad seems to be telemarketers for solar panels.
What we do need is a central agency that can support musicians by booking them locally and find practice and recording rooms for them to work in. Then let the media know where they are playing.
Back in 2008, Candidate for City Council, Joe Aliotti, said we need a Film Commission that is separate and apart from the Humboldt Film Commission. Creating a group dedicated to supporting film makers, negotiating and booking sites for our picturesque area and then helping coordinate an annual film festival is sorely needed.
With all the animals in town, could we attract a PetCo?
What about Ross Dress For Less?
It took us 3 trips into Medford before being able to finally get a parking spot at In N Out Burger? The place is packed from 10:30 in the morning until 2 am in the middle of the night. Wonder what it would take to get In n Out here?
Current Candidate for City Council, Alex Fallman, gave a report on mobile vendors. Why don’t we have more food carts, flower carts and news carts around town?
Are you longing for the days when construction is happening around town while putting contractors and laborers back to work? On the other hand, is it smart to have five pharmacies in town (WalMart, Safeway, Walgreens and RiteAid) with CVS going in next to the Fairgrounds?
Wouldn’t it make more sense to put in a business that has no competition?
What business ideas do you have?
