NOTE: As you know, this important initiative will restore the ability of parents to transfer their home and a limited amount of other property to their children without any change to the property tax bill. It will also restore the same rights for grandparents if the children’s parents are deceased. These constitutional rights that Californians had for decades were taken away by Proposition 19, which passed narrowly in 2020. Voters were not told that Prop. 19, in addition to protecting seniors and wildfire victims, was also the largest property tax increase in California history.

We’re stepping up our efforts to get the Repeal the Death Tax initiative on the November 2024 ballot. We need more than 1 million signatures by the middle of January and the clock is ticking!

When Howard Jarvis was leading the drive to put Proposition 13 on the ballot in 1978, he recorded a radio commercial telling everyone, “There are a great many of you who have gotten petitions signed and they are lying on your desk or in your dresser drawer, where they are no good. If you don’t send them to us by December 2nd, we’re going to lose.”

Do you have any signed petitions on your desk or in your drawer? If so, send them in right now! Please don’t delay! We need time to process all the petitions and get them ready to deliver to 58 separate county offices.

We’re excited to announce that starting this Friday, November 17, we’re hosting a weekly one-hour live radio show called “Repeal the Death Tax Petition Party.” You can listen live anywhere on KSFO.com, and if you’re in the greater Bay Area, you can also listen on 560 KSFO. Invite some friends over and join the petition party, every Friday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

If you’d like a banner for a wall, fence or table, you can request one by clicking right here: REQUEST A BANNER

This campaign runs on small contributions from people like you, who understand the devastating effects of the “death tax.” If you can, and if it doesn’t pose a hardship, your contribution of $25, $50, $100 or whatever you can give will pay for radio ads, outreach to voters statewide, and more banners.

Events coming up:

Our VP of Communications, Susan Shelley, will be John Phillips’ guest at a live remote broadcast of the John Phillips show on KABC (790 AM in Los Angeles and streaming on KABC.com everywhere) on Friday, November 17. Listen live or come out and join us at Gelson’s West Edge, located at 12121 W. Olympic (at Bundy) in West Los Angeles. We’ll be collecting signatures to Repeal the Death Tax throughout the show, from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m.

How you can help right now: The most important thing you can do right now is spread the word to everyone you know — email, phone calls, social media posts — that everyone should go to RepealTheDeathTax.com to print and sign the petition. And then they should tell everyone they know!  And be sure to join the Repeal the Death Tax Petition party on KSFO and KSFO.com this Friday at 6:00 p.m.!

Thank you for your support of the new campaign to Repeal the Death Tax! If you haven’t yet downloaded the petition, you know where to find it!

  1. Prop 19 is really bad for renters too. One man who inherited rental property was forced to raise monthly rents by $1,300 just to cover additional taxes! This displaces families too, many of them multi-generational, who can’t afford huge rent increases. Did you know that California is second to Hawaii in multi-generational living.

  2. Mail your Repeal the Death Tax petition in by December so we can get this on the 2024 ballot. Don’t assume others will make this happen – it’s too important!

Proposition 19 passed in 2020. It was titled “The Home Protection for Seniors, Severely Disabled, Families, and Victims of Wildfire or Natural Disasters Act”. Who wouldn’t vote for that?

But why did realtor associations spend $56 Million supporting it? Because they knew they’d sell more property when children or grandchildren can’t afford Prop 19 taxes.

Many voters feel deceived. They didn’t fully understand that funding would come from gutting Proposition 58, which passed in 1986 with 76% of the vote.

Prop 58 strengthened Prop 13 by allowing parents to pass property to children without taxes being based on full reassessed market value. Under Prop 58 parents were allowed to transfer their lower “tax basis” on with the property. Important in a state with home prices second only to New York.

Now all inherited property is reassessed. Complex new rules determine new taxes, often far higher than what the parents paid. And if your kids don’t move into your home within one year even higher taxes are likely.

Let our children keep our homes and our communities strong. Help Californians stay in California. Get this on the ballot so voters can decide based on FACT not DECEPTION!
