The Tolowa dee-ne’ Nation is hosting the camping area at the Ship Ashore resort. Currently 50 people who have been displaced by the Chetco Bar fire are residing at the resort. It is opened 24 hours a day and volunteers are needed for 2-4 hour shifts to help others in need.
The Shelter opened on Sunday the 21st, receiving approximately 50 people so far. Scott Sullivan is the Chair and Megan Van-pelt is the national resource director. The shelter is available to receive phone calls 24/7 at 707-487-3181 and this number is the primary contact number for Tessa LaFazio. They are accepting donations and volunteers.
Currently, they are expecting to host a fire camp as well to centralize everyone in one general area. The winds are suppose to be picking up starting this evening through the next four days whereas Brookings, Oregon has been placed as level one for evacuation. “This weekend could change the whole game due to the winds,” said Scott Sullivan.
Tolowa dee-ni’ Nation has been coordinating with the Red Cross for breakfast and dinner tomorrow. The Casino has donated two complete meals, Tribal Staff and Community members have also donated blankets, food, and clothing.
Anyone can donate to the shelter by calling the number provided.
