BY DONNA WESTFALL

Every once in a while it’s good to make fun at a serious subject.  While Portland, Oregon fights their fourth go-around in battling the addition of fluoride to their public water, here is a tongue in cheek letter out of Australia.

To whom it may concern,

I am trying to acquire some Hydrofluorosilicic Acid for personal domestic use. I am hoping you can assist. I am from Mildura, VIC, where Hydrofluorosilicic Acid is added to our municipal water supply; however, I am staying with a friend for the next few weeks who, unfortunately, does not receive the substantial health benefits this product has to offer – because she is not connected to the town water supply.

She is currently nursing an infant. I promised her I would look into purchasing some HFSA from Incitec Pivot directly, so her infant does not miss out on the substantial health benefits of this high quality industrial product. According to your MSDS, “At the concentrations used in fluoridation of town water supplies, [this product] is harmless,” and as I have verified through numerous sources, these concentrations are generally 1 milligram per litre of water. Even the Health Department assures me that the Arsenic (As) and Lead (Pb) in this product will be diluted to perfectly safe levels.

As a dried fruit producer, I have been ChemCert qualified for farm chemicals and I am experienced in achieving correct dilutions; thus I will be able to achieve the harmless level of HFSA, as noted on your Material Safety Data Sheet, prior to administration to the infant via water.

Therefore, please immediately advise how I can go about purchasing some HFSA from Incitec Pivot. As I am sure you will understand, this matter is rather urgent, since my friend wants her baby to ingest the product while its teeth are still developing. If we leave it too late, there will be a high risk of caries development due to a fluoride deficiency in the tooth enamel; and lugging town water supplies from Mildura is just not practical.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find an online store via your website. I would prefer to purchase the product online and have it delivered to a specified address, however, I can arrange to pick it up from one of your sales outlets, if necessary. I have also been unable to locate the price, but naturally, we will pay any amount.

And – I also need to purchase two adult HAZMAT suits, and one baby-sized, in case of spillage or emergency (does Pivot offer these for sale too?) – because, as noted byHydramet Australia, “fluorosilicic acid is a particularly aggressive and hazardous chemical” – and with a baby around, I’m sure you’ll understand, we can’t take any chances.

I look forward to hearing back from you. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Daniel Zalec.
