Confirmed by a reliable source, Ray’s Market in Smith River is due to close August 4th.  This is devastating news for the Smith River area. It will create a hardship for many that have relied on the store all these years.  So far, nothing is due to go in it’s place.

Some are wondering if there’s anything that can be done to create a co-op market?

  1. There will be a meeting of, by and for the residents of Smith River and any interested members of the community at 6 PM Wednesday July 24th at the Community Center on First Street in Smith River. County Board of Supervisors Mike Sullivan and Martha McClure have been invited as well as the parent company of Ray’s Food Place C & K Foods Inc. in Brookings. Joni Forsht a member of the Smith River Heritage, President of the local Neighborhood Watch and member of the Smith River Days planning committee said she is hoping for a good crowd to discuss the possible options to Ray’s closing.

  2. What a shame the current store Manager has done such a good job cleaning up that store! It is just another sign that Del Norte is a dieing area. No jobs and the good old boys just keep doing what they do. Our young people are our future and they leave here just as soon as they can and I for one do not blame them. Unless something is done it will just keep going down hill.
